AAS Celebrates the Late Dr. Frank Kameny's Lifetime Efforts for Equal Employment Rights

At its 219th semiannual meeting last week in Austin, Texas, the American Astronomical Society (AAS) presented a certificate of appreciation commemorating Dr. Frank Kameny's lifetime efforts to secure equal employment rights for all. In 1957 Dr. Kameny, a Ph.D. astronomer and member of the AAS, was unjustly fired from his position with the U.S. government because he was gay. His subsequent efforts to advance the cause of gay rights included organizing some of the first public protests for homosexual rights in America, running as the first openly gay candidate for Congress, and writing the first petition to the Supreme Court to argue that discrimination based on sexual orientation violates constitutional civil-rights protections.

Be My Valentine

Be My Valentine

I have the same problem every year at this time: what do I get for my valentine? We've been together now 17 years and I'm stuck. Early on, it was easy to buy him gifts. His wardrobe was a gay nightmare: garish sweaters, shoes a decade old, and underwear that I had to remove from his body immediately to avoid involuntary vomiting. So after I started discretely discarding his bad clothes and wretch-inducing footwear, I gifted him with Kenneth Cole, Doc Martens and 2xist. It was a simple time, and I was glad to do it just so I didn't have to make excuses for him at cocktail parties. "Oh, he just got home from his job at the circus and didn't have time to change." "Sorry he's dressed like that, but his house burned down and cheap fabric was all that we could salvage from the rubble."

Review: Music On Film: A Hard Day's Night

Review: Music On Film: A Hard Day's Night

Known as the quintessential boy band, as well as, you know, being only the world’s greatest pop group, the Beatles have set the bar pretty high in the history of the music industry. Hailing from the clutches of WWII-stricken England, the quartet who would become lovably known as the Fab Four, hit the United States in the wake of the Kennedy assassination, sparking a welcome firestorm of screaming young girls (and probably boys, too, I’m sure) with its powerhouse mix of skiffle-style infusion with rock ‘n’ roll. A Hard Day’s Night was a little black-and-white, low-budget, documentary-style film that tapped into the Beatles’ sense of comedy, candidness and the need to satiate the euphoric craze that was quickly termed Beatlemania.

There are no Gay Jews Philadelphia Gay News

For me, the aging process has led to a clearer view of equality. After all, it has been the passion of my life for 42 years. Everywhere I travel, I’m in search of how our community is depicted. Unfortunately, I notice we are not always included. That is discrimination by censorship. And unfortunately, many of our national organizations get a failing grade on this subject. They don’t understand the seriousness of this censorship. Even GLAAD doesn’t know the history of the battle to end censorship in mainstream media. They must learn that our collective history is the building blocks for our future, and the justification of why our struggle for equality deserves to become a reality.

Sexual Language

Sexual LanguageBooks by Lee Lynch

I didn’t like living with my father growing up and can’t imagine sharing a home with someone so essentially different from myself as an adult. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with guys, and I feel much more akin to gay male friends than to non-gay male friends. We’re just not compatible. The energy, for me, is akin to two magnets turned the wrong way – they very forcefully repel rather than attract.

And now our new data demonstrate that 17-year-olds raised from birth by lesbian mothers are as happy as their peers,  said lead author Loes van Gelderen, MSc, University of Amsterdam.
